Increased fire restrictions start today in Southeastern Arizona.
Some restrictions have been in place, but today, they ratchet up to eliminate most activities that could cause a wildfire.
No fires are allowed in most public lands in Southern Arizona, not even in developed campsites. Also prohibited: smoking, engines other than vehicles, discharging a firearm, driving off road and fireworks.
Violators can be charged with a misdemeanor and a fine of up to $5,000, and up to six months in jail. If a fire starts because someone violated these restrictions, the person can be held responsible for costs related to putting it out.
The restrictions affect:
- Bureau of Land Management Gila District
- all of the Coronado National Forest
- Coronado National Memorial
- Saguaro National Park
- Casa Grande Ruins National Monument
- Chiricahua National Monument and Fort Bowie National Historic Site
- Tumacácori National Historical Park
- Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument
- Arizona State Forestry Division
