University of Arizona Considers Ban on E-Cigarettes

Cigarettes, pipes and chewing tobacco were banned on campus in 2014.

The University of Arizona has proposed extending its ban on tobacco products to include e-cigarettes and vape pens.

The campus prohibited regular cigarettes, pipes and chewing tobacco two years ago.

That ban initially included e-cigarettes, but after considering comments from the public the school dropped that part of the policy, saying not enough was known about their health effects.

According to the university, the rationale for extending the ban to e-cigarettes is that recent research suggested that they may compromise the health of people who use them or who are exposed to their vapors, and numerous health organizations recommend including them in smoke- and tobacco-free policies.

The UA is asking members of the community to provide input on the revised policy.
