$1.4 Billion City of Tucson Budget Faces Tuesday Vote

Spending package arrived at after months of cutsto erase projected $40 million deficit.

The Tucson City Council will vote Tuesday on a city budget for next fiscal year of nearly $1.4 billion, arrived at after months of cutting across various city departments.

The proposed budget is almost $5 million more than this fiscal year’s, ending this month and includes a property tax increase of less than $1 for the average $150,000 house.

The budgeting process began earlier this year with City Manager Michael Ortega projecting a $40 million deficit. A wide range of cuts, including a Police Department reorganization projected to save $7 million, erased the deficit.

City Council spent months cutting $40 million dollars. The Tucson police chief reorganized his department and reduced its budget by about seven million dollars.
