Senate Bill 1304 strengthens the reporting requirements for abortions performed in Arizona. The bill requires hospitals and facilities where abortions are performed to submit a form to the Arizona Department of Health Services which contains the following information:
-Name, address, and type of facility where the abortion was performed -The county where the abortion was performed -The woman’s age, race, ethnicity, and marital status -The educational background of the woman -Number of previous pregnancies, miscarriages, and abortions -Gestational age of fetus -Reason for the abortion -Type of procedure performed -Preexisting medical conditions that would complicate the pregnancy -Basis of the medical judgment that a medical emergency allowed for waivng of informed consent -Physician’s statement regarding medical necessity of abortion if fetus is deemed viable -The weight of the fetus if the fetus is deemed viable
SB 1304 also requires that the physician who performs the abortion sign the form. The woman’s name is not included.
SB 1304 is sponsored by 14 members of the Legislature including three from Pima County: Senator Frank Antenori (R), Senator Al Melvin (R), and Representative David Gowan (R).
On March 22, 2010 the full Senate approved SB 1304 on a 17-12 vote.
