Tucson City Council Member Richard Fimbres is retiring from his Ward 5 council seat, effective May 1.

Fimbres, who has been on the council since 2009, announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election, but said in his resignation letter to the Mayor and Council that health issues have forced him to step aside sooner.

“I had hoped to complete my current term of office, but I need to turn my full attention to my family and my health. I'm providing you this notice now so that you and my peers on the Council can begin the steps you choose to take to fill the vacancy that will occur on the effective date of my resignation,” he wrote.

Ward 5 covers the Southern parts of Tucson, and is up for re-election in November.

The Mayor and Council will appoint a replacement council member at an upcoming meeting to serve until then.
