Arizona’s two senators say Native communities across Arizona will receive a share of a $500,000 grant to combat the opioid crisis by supporting prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts in tribal and urban Indian communities.
Funding from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Community Opioid Intervention Prevention Program provides federal funding for education on opioid misuse, culturally appropriate interventions, medication-assisted treatments, and recovery and harm reduction activities.
In 2023, 9% of overdose deaths in Pima County were Native Americans while their portion of the population is about half that.
This announcement comes after the Trump Administration's recent freeze on federal grants and loans, which raised concerns about funding for a number of programs including health services.
