Nogales, Sonora, mayor Juan Francisco Gim Nogales says the Mexican National Guard is arriving in the city as part of the agreement made by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for the Trump Administration to delay 25% tariffs on Mexican imports for at least a month.

"Besides coming to guard the border, they will also be attentive to other actions related to national security and local security,” Gim said in Spanish. “Obviously, there will be coordination among all three levels of government since we will have a significant number of National Guard members in Nogales."

As well, the Mexican border city has opened a shelter in preparation for large numbers of Mexican nationals being deported from the U.S., and the Nogales mayor said they began receiving people last week.

El Diario de Sonora in Nogales reported that the shelter has capacity for nearly 3,000 people, which Gim says is for repatriated nationals to explore their options during a time of uncertainty. They had received about three dozen people early last week.

“It has remained steady, but I think it will gradually increase," Gim said. "However, I also believe there won't be a massive deportation, at least not in the next month, as negotiations and agreements are being made at the presidential level."
